3 Mistakes Pilates Instructors Can Avoid as We Navigate Covid-19

Uncategorized May 05, 2020

Hi Friend! As we start week 8 of quarantine, many of us are starting to ask the questions...

"What does the studio re-opening look like?

"Will my studio re-open?"

"Will my clients return?"

These are difficult questions to ask, and even more difficult to answer. The truth is the way we teach Pilates will never be the same, the "new normal" is going to force us to shift the way we do things and how we think. And we have two choices: 1) drag our feet and kick and scream trying to keep things as they were before Covid-19 OR 2) take a deep, hard look at how we can adapt (to not only be of service to our clients, but also make sure to never have the "rug pulled out from under us" again).

Here are 3 mistakes we can avoid:

1. Not using this time to build your online audience and email list. It's scary to put yourself out there... FB Lives, IG stories, being regular with your newsletter. Another great way to grow your audience is to get on other people's podcasts, IG Lives, and speak in FB groups and give away your best stuff. I know it's uncomfortable, but we have to do it anyway! During this time, people are spending 50% more time on the internet (duh!) and they're looking for solutions to their problems. How can you be their solution? You have so much to share, even beyond your Pilates teaching capabilities.

2. Not using this time to create multiple revenue streams. This situation has been a real eye-opener on the importance of having multiple ways of bringing in income. Sure, teaching clients in-person and online is a major source of income for most of us. But, there are so many other ways to add to your bottom-line: online courses (in any area of expertise, not just Pilates), virtual events, consulting (what are you really good at and what do people ask you about?), tutoring, write an e-book or "how-to" guides, becoming an affiliate for products you love and use, network marketing (I just started with a company I truly believe in), mentoring, and monthly memberships are just a few ideas that you can start with.

3. Not using this time as a great opportunity for growth in all areas of our life: networking, business, finance, career, self-development, relationship, health, self-care. Some of us are trying to figure things out on their own, in a silo of thinking. Now's the time to engage with others and expand our network. There are so many people that we would normally not have the ability to learn from directly, and now they're on almost daily giving out all their best information! Personally, I've been listening to Chris Harder, Brendon Burchard and Robyn Youkilis to boost my education and learning more about business, high-performance thinking and self-care. This past year I've been part of 3 masterminds, and without them, I would be lost during this time. Connecting with other like-minded professionals within the Pilates community AND outside the Pilates community is so important to gain deeper understanding and varying perspectives, which are necessary for businesses to not only survive, but thrive during this time!
