Stay Motivated Moving Your Body!

Maintaining our motivation to stay active and move our bodies can feel overwhelming after all these weeks of "safer-at-home" measures! Have you lost some inspiration?

I was featured in a blog by Robyn Youkilis recently talking about fun and inspiring workouts to do at home. Working out at home takes a lot of determination and dedication. Now more than ever we need to maintain or even level-up our physical health and exercise is a big part of that equation. The science proves that exercise is one of the best ways to lower stress, improve mood and increase brain and gut health (all needed for an optimal immune system).

Here are some fun ways to inspire us all to move more:

  1. Get outside - It's summer!! The sun is shining and there's no better way to improve our mood and Vitamin D levels than to get some exercise outside. If you can be in nature, that has even greater benefits (check out the topic "biophilia" on how nature affects human physiology)!
  2. Accountability Workout Buddy - Grab a friend and do an online class together on Zoom (I do this weekly with my friends from The Class by Taryn Toomey). Nothing makes 6-minutes of burpees a little bit easier than knowing your friend is suffering, too! ;)
  3. Put on some great music and move - exercise doesn't have to be a formal class. Just dance, shake, hop - a few minutes will get your blood moving and your heart beating and lift your spirits right away!
  4. Be Intuitive - stop and feel what your body needs today. It might be intensity, it might be restorative. Don't push yourself into a difficult workout if you need to be gentle with yourself and vice versa.
  5. Set measurable goals - daily, weekly or monthly. This could be minutes, miles or times/week that you're going to move your body. Reach the goal? Get a reward! A lovely bath, a new plant, some quiet time for yourself...you get the picture.
  6. Set a reminder on your phone - every 55 minutes get up and move. You'll see your energy and productivity increase exponentially if you do this simple thing every hour while you're working.
  7. Take a walk at the end of the day - with yourself, your dog, your spouse, your family. This is such a nice way to end the work day and begin your evening ritual.
  8. Shift your perspective from what movement "should" be, to just becoming more active every day. Can't go to the gym, get creative. Have a "beginner's mindset". What do you have around the house or what resources do you have on line.
  9. Finally, take a LIVE class - nothing is more motivating than knowing your teacher can see you and you have a community/tribe to move with. You'll have a sense of belonging and responsibility to show up for others, not just yourself!
